Otterly Lucky at St. Vrain State Park in Firestone, Colorado

On Sunday, March 21, 2022, I went to St. Vrain Colorado State Park. The park is about 40-minutes north of Denver in Firestone.

This was one of the adventures that I decided to go on by myself.  I was ready for a day of exploring and taking my time.  I literally had all day.

I found a parking lot near Pelican Pond that was a little more secluded.  There was a covered picnic area that was not directly on the trail.

There was a rock near the water that I sat down to take in the view.  As I sat there, I saw something go by me.  It caught me off guard.  I took a closer look.  I felt excited as I realized it wasn’t a fish or bird.  Honestly, I wasn’t sure what it was – muskrat, otter, beaver, or maybe something else.

I sat there for a while watching it swim back and forth.  I’ve been to a lot of parks but this was the coolest experience (so far)!  My new little friend disappeared into the vegetation.  I sat there for awhile reflecting on what happened and hoping he would come back – but he didn’t.

Some Googling didn’t help me figure out what I had just seen.  I explored the park for awhile before I headed home.  Once back and settled in, I posted the photograph on the OurFunPass Instagram page.  The Colorado Park and Wildlife Department replied to the post saying “Otterly lucky!”  I had the answer – it was an otter!
