Jewell Wetlands Park is part of the City of Aurora Park System. This 50-acre park in Aurora, Colorado, offers walking trails, nature viewing, and photography opportunities. The park is close to Utah Park, Cherry Creek State Park, and the Aurora History Museum.
There is a parking lot located off of Jewell Avenue. The parking lot had approximately eight parking spots. There were also two Porta-Potties in the parking lot for visitors to use. The side streets near the park appeared to have on-street parking.
Once you arrive at the Jewell Avenue parking lot, you can begin your walk on the trail by heading west. You will encounter a sign that has a map of the park. Next to the park sign, there is a small pond.
From there, you can walk around the dirt loop trail. There is a small stream that at the North part of the loop. During our visit, we saw a duck floating down the stream. As we continued around the path, there was a wooden boardwalk. When we visited, it was not yet Spring, so the area was dry. The plants were also brown. We have not gone to this park during the other seasons. I would imagine that it is green and full of moisture in the Spring and Summer.
We walked along the boardwalk to the nature viewing area. The benches overlook a heavily planted area, which had many birds. The viewing area would be a great spot to view birds with binoculars or take photographs with a camera.
There is also a butterfly garden that is located slightly off of the dirt loop.
Our Experience
We visited Jewell Wetlands Park for about an hour. During that time, we walked the loop twice at a leisurely pace. There were a few people walking their dogs on leashes. We came across individuals and families visiting the park. Everyone we ran into was friendly.
We plan on visiting the park in the Summer. The park is close by and easy to get to, which makes visiting this park well worth it – even for a short visit.
